OUT FROM IT ALL

Revolutions

in a profeminist life

About George Morrison

The idea for the book Out From It All came to me in 1986 as I finally decided to end 14 years of self-deception and start living by the twin themes of the book, freedom and honesty.

I stopped repressing half of myself and accepted my bisexuality, a change that defied my culture’s centuries-old tenets of shame and hatred. It was a spectacular victory – at times euphoric, but with a certain amount of fear, too.

It turned me foursquare against the patriarchy I had unwittingly been a part of as I wrongly assumed I was a heterosexual. I became a believer in active nonviolence as a way of transforming the world.

The region called “Kentuckiana,” a blend of Kentucky and Southern Indiana, is an area I love, despite being mindful of its faults; it can at the same time nurture and stifle a creative mind.

Also a blend is my self-styled, eclectic belief system; I favor democratic socialism, but am wary of bureaucracy and monopoly and am doubtful that today’s sectarian left could bring about an effective and humane socialist system. I am more attracted to the Gandhian economic model relying on the ideals of socialism without burdening the world with mechanistic ideologies.

The universe calls, and I believe we should explore it and must stop space from becoming another front for war.
